Evolution of the SAP HANA Cloud Platform

Given that SAPPHIRE NOW is around the corner and that we just announced the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud – and the more than an hour long Twitter conversation I had with SAP mentors and followers on SAP HANA Cloud, SAP NetWeaver Cloud (Neo), and SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud – I wanted to use this opportunity to take a platform view and talk about what the SAP HANA Cloud Platform is and how it fits with the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud

It has been an interesting and exciting few months at SAP as the cloud vision and strategy has matured and evolved. One of the important aspects of this vision is that the SAP HANA Cloud Platform has emerged as the single underlying platform that provides the foundation for SAP’s overall cloud portfolio and is thus core to SAP’s cloud strategy.


So what exactly is SAP HANA Cloud Platform?

SAP HANA Cloud Platform is SAP’s in-memory cloud platform, our Platform-as-a-Service offering enabling developers to build, extend, and run applications in the cloud. It provides developers a set of application and database services and features native, integrated and open developer experiences.

The platform provides a set of application services (or SAP HANA AppServices) viz. integration, portal, mobile, analytics, collaboration etc. that allow developers to flexibly and efficiently build modern applications. It also enables developers to use HANA as a database-as-a-service (with SAP HANA DB Services). In addition, there are several platform enablement services including Persistence, Identity Management, Document & Mail Services. The platform also includes comprehensive cloud enablement capabilities including infrastructure management, billing, metering, monitoring, etc.

The platform provides developer experiences for all types of developers and application needs. It offers choice and enables developers to bring their development tool of choice. Those developers looking to maximize their application performance use native development with HANA Studio / XS / JavaScript /SQLScript and soon will be able to use a native development environment called HANA IDE Lite. Those looking to use higher level of abstraction can use River Definition Language (RDL) that will also be delivered with a RAD integrated environment and achieve the same results as native development.. Open development experience for this platform is available through Java and JVM based languages (like Python, Scala etc.), where developers can use Neo’s(we’ll talk about this in a minute) capabilities including an integrated Eclipse-based development environment or bring their own app server and development tools.

The SAP HANA Cloud Platform will be used by SAP and partners to create extensions to existing SAP applications e.g. creating a timesheet entry and approval module in SAP Employee Central for contingency workers or adding a recommended like products list and extend SAP Sales-On-Demand so that a sales-person to can proactively manage their opportunities – both these can be done easily using SAP HANA Cloud Platform. Startups and ISVs will also use the SAP HANA Cloud Platform to build entirely new applications that don’t need any other SAP applications in the landscape e.g. cancer genome analysis or traffic route optimization

What happened to SAP NetWeaver Cloud (Neo)? Is it the same as SAP HANA Cloud Platform?

SAP NetWeaver Cloud (aka Neo) is now a part of SAP Hana Cloud Platform.

SAP NetWeaver Cloud provided two sets of capabilities – a Java/JVM based developer and run-time experience and tools, and platform enablement capabilities such as key platform enablement services including Persistence, Identity Management, Document Management, Mail Service, HTML5, infrastructure management and an Operations Console.

As of March 2013, SAP NetWeaver Cloud has merged with the larger SAP HANA Cloud Platform and those capabilities now deliver some of the key AppServices and enablement services of the HANA Cloud Platform. The Java capabilities and components of Neo provide the Java and JVM based developer experience and run-time for the SAP HANA Cloud Platform

How about SAP HANA One?

Nothing changes for SAP HANA One. SAP HANA One is HANA made available on a public cloud (AWS, KT, and PT) as a service. In other words, it is an implementation of SAP HANA DBServices on the public cloud, with a few value added features for business intelligence on top.

How does the SAP HANA Cloud Platform fit in to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud?

SAP HANA Cloud Platform is the PaaS layer of the HANA Enterprise Cloud solution. This enables customers and partners to extend functionality of their applications hosted in the HANA Enterprise Cloud and also build new applications. In this case applications built on SAP Hana Cloud Platform are essentially running on SAP Hana Enterprise Cloud.

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is a cloud based managed service offering for SAP customers and partners to deploy their HANA applications on a modern peta-scale cloud. By running mission-critical SAP® ERP, SAP® CRM and SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse applications in a managed cloud service model ,SAP aims to enable organizations to realize faster time-to-value coupled with lower total cost of ownership. SAP Hana Enterprise Cloud also supports custom HANA applications, including non-SAP centric ones.

In Summary

The SAP HANA Cloud Platform is a platform to build, extend, and run applications in the cloud for SAP, our customers, partners, and developers. It is generally available with several customers and partners actively building applications on it. SAP has also built many applications on this platform, with several more on the way. Examples include: SAP Precision Retailing, SAP Product Stewardship Network, SAP Cloud Appliance Library, SAP Financial Services Network, SAP SuccessFactors Media Service, SAP Fan Experience, SAP My Runway, SAP Care Circles, SAP Scouting, SAP Precision Gaming, etc.
