The Sunrisers Hyderabad will host the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday evening in a crucial battle that will inevitably break up the log jam that currently is the middle of the table. With their 5-5 record the Knight Riders currently occupy 4th place in the tournament’s table and if the season were to end today they would have the final playoff spot. The Sunrisers are two points back of the Knight Riders and must win tonight if they realistically hope to extend their campaign into the playoffs. By loading historical match data in SAP HANA we can preview tonight’s showdown by analyzing how KKR and SRH faired against each other in last season’s tournament.
With SAP Lumira we can create a Manhattan chart that shows the number of runs each team scored per over in the match. The Knight Riders easily won the match as they scored 180 runs during their innings and then their attack held the Sunrisers to a paltry total of 132 by preventing the Sunrisers from scoring 10 or more runs in 17 of their overs.
By making a few quick changes in SAP Lumira’s easy to use interface we can plot the number of runs each Knight Rider batsman scored per ball during their innings. Gautam Gambhir scored 53 runs on 45 runs to earn the Man of the Match honor. Check out Gambhir’s innings in green below. Note the seven boundaries he struck and the 26 boundaries that KKR struck as a team.
On May 19th last year the Sunrisers successfully overhauled the Knight Rider’s total of 130 runs in the 18th over. With SAP Crystal Reports we can visualize the cumulative number of runs each team scored and when their wickets fell during the match with a worm chart. Evident from the chart is that after the 4th over the Sunrisers were clearly out pacing KKR’s run rate but a few stymied overs later in their innings made Hyderabad’s chase a little more difficult than it should have been.
Parthiv Patel was honored as the Man of the Match as his 47 runs on 37 balls were crucial in Hyderabad’s successful chase. With SAP Crystal Reports we chart the length and trajectory of each of Patel’s 19 singles and 7 fours with a wagon wheel. Patel hit each of his boundaries behind him with square cuts, hooks, and sweeps.
Can KKR vault firmly into 4th place or will the Sunrisers completely muddle the middle of the table?
