Riding a four match winning streak the red-hot Kolkata Knight Riders will host the Chennai Super Kings in a clash of table topping teams tonight at Eden Gardens. Find out how the Super Kings won a Seventeen17 rain shortened match earlier this month in Ranchi and discover how the sides faired against each other last season. By loading ball by ball match data from this season into SAP HANA we can create insight-laden visualizations in SAP Lumira and SAP Crystal Reports to preview tonight’s potential playoff preview.
With SAP Lumira we can create a pair of donut charts that show the percentage of runs each batsman has scored for their team. The Super Kings’s powerful lineup is lead by the dynamic duo of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum who’s 449 and 352 respective runs are shown below in purple and green. Robin Uthappa has been KKR’s most potent batsman as the Indian right handed batsman has scored 422 runs and accounted for over a quarter of Kolkata’s production.
Using SAP Lumira we can further examine Chennai’s fantastic duo by building a bar chart that the shows the number of runs Smith and McCullum have combined to score broken up by whether they were boundary runs. Smith and McCullum combined for 72 runs in the Seventeen17 match with 46 of those runs coming from boundaries. Four times in 11 match the pair have partnered for a combined 100 or more runs during their innings. However, their production has recently started to drop as they have twice failed to combine for more than 50 runs in last four matches.
With SAP Crystal Reports we can create a graphic that compares the economies of Kolkata’s best bowler, Sunil Narine, and the strike-rates of Chennai’s best batsman, Dwayne Smith, broken down the combinations of deliveries of varying lines and lengths they have tossed or faced. A majority of Narine’s back of a length balls have been stymying and his 5.57 economy from off stump length balls is rather impressive as that’s the most frequent delivery for many bowlers. Smith has crushed the half volleys he has face this season but has struggled with yorkers. Rarely delivering yorkers will the Kolkata’s spinner Narine attempt to exploit Smith’s troubles with yorkers when he likely faces him early in the innings?
Can the Super Kings clinch a playoff spot tonight? Or will KKR extend their winning steak to five matches?
