The Super Kings snapped Mumbai’s nine match home winning streak with some timely boundaries from their phenomenal Skipper and consistently clutch closing batsman, MS Dhoni. The Super Kings reaffirmed their position as one of the top teams in the tournament and seemingly closed the door on Mumbai’s possible miraculous push for the final playoff spot. By loading ball by ball match data into SAP HANA we can create informative visualizations of the match’s action with SAP Lumira and SAP Crystal Reports to analyze the match.
With SAP Lumira we can create a Manhattan chart that shows the number of runs each team scored per over. In the opening innings the Super Kings’ attack limited the Indians to some paltry early overs of two and four runs and took a quick wicket. While the Indians picked up their pace in the middle of the innings, their run rate hovered around 6.50 for most of match until a furious flurry in the last few overs gave their attack a punchers chance of a successful defense. After a pair of productive and then not so productive overs to start their chase the Super Kings’ run rate hovered around 7.00 for most of their innings. A letdown in the 19th over set their required rate at 11 runs, which Dhoni easily delivered.
With SAP Lumira we can plot the number of runs each Super Kings batsman scored per ball during their innings with an easily made area chart. Clearly evident in the chart are the nine fours and six maximums that the Super Kings hit as a team. Dwayne Smith and Faf du Plessis in green and yellow below respectively scored more than 30 runs during their innings. MS Dhoni was Chennai’s most effective batsman as he scored 22 runs on 12 balls for a strike rate of 183.33 and clinched the Super Kings victory with a pair of successive boundaries.
Chennai’s Dwayne Smith was honored as the Man of the Match as the 57 runs he scored as Chennai’s opening batsmen provided an excellent foundation for the Super Kings successful chase. With SAP Crystal Reports we can build a graphic that shows the length, trajectory and results of each of Smith’s run scoring shots. 21 of Smith’s 25 run scoring shots were hit to the left of his center and he hit a pair of off drive fours to his right.
