The Kings XI’s clash with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first eliminator match has already been set for Tuesday but Punjab will still have much to play for, including a chance to have their highest tournament win total ever, when they host the table bottoming Delhi Daredevils in the 55th match of the Indian Premier Twenty20 tournament. After sitting out the pervious match, the Kings XI’s big batsman Glenn Maxwell will be seeking to reclaim the Orange Cap he has worn for much of the season. See how the Kings XI barely defeated the Daredevils earlier this week and discover how the Kings XI swept last year’s season series. By loading ball by ball match data into SAP HANA we can create insight-laden visualizations in SAP Lumira to preview this afternoon’s showdown.
With SAP Lumira we can create a set of bar charts that show the number of fours and sixes that each Kings XI and Daredevil Batsman have struck this season. Kings XI’s offensive prowess is clearly evident in the pair of charts as both Glenn Maxwell (in blue) and Vierender Sehwag (in light pink) have smashed over 40 fours. JP Duminy leads the Daredevils’ lineup with 21 fours and 20 sixes. Maxwell will mostly like be trying to add to his league leading 35 maximums as he hopes to re-take the lead for the tournament’s top run-getter.
By creating a regional geographic hierarchy for batting teams in SAP Lumira we can overlay bubbles on a map of the Indian subcontinent of the total runs each of tonight’s sides have scored in the tournament, broken down by boundary runs. The Kings XI Punjab have scored a vast majority, 63.9 percent to be precise, of their runs via boundaries as they have netted 1,394 boundary runs and only 790 non boundary runs. Comparatively Delhi has struck only 1,026 boundary runs and 884 non boundary runs. Expect boundaries to abound in Mohali this afternoon.
In additional to having scored the most runs, the Kings XI are also the tournament’s top wicket-taking team. With SAP Lumira we can compare the number of wickets the Kings XI and the Daredevils have taken by building a bar chart depicting the number of scalps and slicing the individual bars by bowler name. Sandeep Sharma has 18 scalps this season and Askhar Patel, Rishi Dhawan, and Lakshmipathy Balaji have each taken 12 wickets. Conversely, not a single Daredevil bowler has taken more than eight wickets this season.
Can the Daredevils finally win a match on Indian soil this season? Or will Maxwell put on a boundary show to delight the Kings XI supporters?
