Needing to chase down Hyderabad’s 161 target in 15.2 overs to knock the Super Kings out of second place, Yusuf Pathan’s record setting fifty propelled Kolkata’s blistering assent into the first qualifier. The great performances of Orange Cap man, Robin Uthappa, and Purple Cap man, Sunil Narine, extended the Knight Rider’s winning streak to seven matches. By loading ball by ball match data into SAP HANA we can analyze Kolkata’s obliteration of Hyderabad’s target by creating insight-laden visualizations in SAP Lumira and SAP Crystal Reports.
With SAP Lumira we can create a Manhattan chart that shows the number of runs each team scored per over. Kolkata’s attack greatly limited Hyderabad’s innings by holding the Sunrises’ batsman to under five runs or less in nine overs. The tournament’s Purple Cap man, KKR’s Sunil Narine, bettered his tournament leading (for bowlers who have delivered more than eight overs) economy rate to 5.91 after brilliantly bowling the 6th, 12th, 16th, and 18th over. In seven of their 15 overs the Knight Riders scored more than 10 runs including monster 11th and 13th overs from Pathan’s powerful shots.
By making a few modifications in SAP Lumira’s intuitive interface we can show the number of runs each Knight Rider batsman scored per ball during their electrifying innings. Knight Rider’s Captain, Gautam Gambhir, and Purple Cap man, Robin Uthappa formed an effective early partnership, shown in blue and yellow below, that was marked by five fours and a maximum. After Gambhir was dismissed in the 5th over, Kolkata’s chase started to sputter until Pathan entered the crease. After Singles on his first four balls, the right-handed all-rounder exploded for five fours and seven sixes to reach 50 on 15 balls and finished his innings with 72 from 22 balls for a spectacular strike-rate of 327.27.
With SAP Crystal Reports we dive can further into Pathan’s incredible performance in the crease by breaking down the strike-rates he posted when facing different combinations of line and length deliveries. Pathan crushed back of length balls and had strike-rates of 300 and 400 against deliveries with an off stump line. Panthan wasn’t nearly as effective against longer delivers as he only had strike-rates of 200 and 100 vs yorkers and full tosses respectively.
