Kolkata’s spectacular attack undressed the potent Kings XI Punjab lineup in route to punching their ticket for the 8th Indian Premier Twenty20 tournament Championship match. The Knight Riders easily defended their 163 run total by taking eight wickets from the listless Punjab side. The Kings XI now must win two consecutive matches if they hope to lift the golden trophy. By processing ball by ball match data with the blazing speed of SAP HANA we can create insightful visualizations with SAP Lumira and SAP Crystal Reports.
With SAP Crystal Reports we can create a worm chart that shows the cumulative number of runs each team scored at any point in the match and when each of their wickets were taken. Both sides lost wickets in the 2nd over and had a few high scoring early overs. As evidenced by the sudden stagnation in the red line in the worm chart, the three successive overs in which Kolkata’s attack took a wicket really hampered Punjab’s chase as the Kings XI’s pace stalled out and they didn’t reach the century mark until the 17th over. After another pair of scalps by the Knight Rider’s attack in the final overs the Kings XI were relegated to the second qualifier.
With SAP Lumira we can create an area chart that shows the number of runs each Knight Rider batsman struck during their opening innings. After Skipper Gautam Gambhir was dismissed in the second over, Orange Cap man, Robin Uthappa, approprietly in colored in orange below, and Manish Pandey, in green below, formed an excellent partnership that scored 65 runs in a seven over stretch. The next five Knight Rider batsman each scored between 17 and 20 runs and finished their innings with strike-rates north of 111. Note the 17 fours and five maximums that the Knight Riders’ lineup struck.
Umesh Yadav’s hat-trick of scalps earned the right-armed medium bowler the Man of the Match honor. With SAP Crystal Reports we can create a grid that breaks down the line, length, and result of each of Yadav’s 24 deliveries. Yadav’s most effective and frequent deliveries were off stump and outside off stump length balls. With those tosses Yadav only conceded three runs while in taking three wickets and recording eight dots.
