Today, we are very excited to announce the general availability for SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems.  This represents an extension of one of the most successful partnerships in the IT industry, built on the long history of SAP and IBM bringing innovation to the enterprise.

With this release, SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems is supported for customers running SAP Business Warehouse on IBM Power Systems. This solution is available on SUSE Linux, for configurations initially scaling-up to 3TB. This is available within the Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI) model, which will enable customers to leverage their existing investments in infrastructure.

“HANA requires a platform that can run massive transactional and analytical workloads on the same hardware, with a processor architecture that is designed to handle these types of workloads. It is of critical importance for customers to make the right infrastructure choice, one that can support the current and future system requirements for HANA applications …” – IDC: For the First Time, Architectural Choice for SAP Customers That Want to Move to HANA

Customer Benefits

The availability of SAP HANA on the IBM POWER8 system, is a testament to our commitment to offer customers choice, and is an evolutionary step in our journey to open up the platform. With this solution, enterprise customers can now realize the transformational benefits of SAP HANA running on IBM Power Systems:

Simplify: With SAP HANA now available on IBM POWER8 systems, customers can reduce their infrastructure complexity, consolidate their enterprise workloads, while maintaining customer choice and openness.

Accelerate: Clients can now support transactional and analytical processing against a single copy of data using advanced technologies from SAP HANA combined with the increased computational speed, data bandwidth, low latency, and resiliency of IBM Power Systems to unleash the power of your enterprise data. In a recent test, IBM set a world record in the industry leading SAP BW Enhanced Mixed Load (BW-EML) Standard Application Benchmark at 2 billion records, demonstrating the cumulative workload impact of these optimized IBM Power Systems to deliver twice the performance per core over previous benchmarks.

Innovate: SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems can help you innovate like never before, leveraging in-memory processing on an open system, to deliver real-time, Big Data analytics. Customers can now utilize their existing IBM POWER8 infrastructure, running their systems of innovation based on SAP HANA on SUSE Linux on these systems.

Early Customer Experiences

Customers see significant performance improvements running SAP BW on HANA on IBM Power Systems, over traditional legacy databases like Oracle. The Technical University of Munich decided to run SAP HANA on IBM Power systems as it provided them with better performance, faster and easier data access, and greater flexibility. A large pharmaceutical company had a 100X improvement in query performance, and an 88% reduction in ETL execution time compared to what they had running the same workload on their legacy database. In another instance, a large energy provider saw a 95% reduction in query response times compared to running those same queries against a legacy database.

SAP and IBM are very excited about the tremendous market momentum of SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems. We have teamed together to introduce the “POWER Up with SAP HANA” program for customers to help you dramatically simplify IT, accelerate your business to give you a competitive edge, and innovate like never before. By participating in this program, customers can take advantage of try and buy programs, database and platform migration programs, and financing plans to get started quickly.
