We are delighted to announce that SAP has been identified as a “Leader” in The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Warehouse, Q2 2017. The Forrester Research report, released last week, evaluated 15 commercial big data warehouse vendors currently competing in this heated marketplace. The Leaders identified by Forrester offer large and complex deployments, support a broader set of use cases, and deliver a high degree of automation, according to the report.
Forrester Research evaluated the latest releases of SAP HANA, SAP Vora, SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services (formerly Altiscale), SAP BW/4HANA, and SAP Data Services. SAP earned a 5/5 score in a total of 14 criteria:
- Data Ingestion
- Data Integration
- Data Modeling
- Data Transformation and Aggregation
- Query Processing and Access
- Data Governance
- Big Data Warehouse Ecosystem Management
- High Availability and Disaster Recovery
- Analytic Capabilities
- Professional Services
- Product Revenue
- Customer Base
Here’s what the latest Wave™ has to say about SAP:
“SAP’s BDW focuses on real-time analytics, scalability, and integration. Enterprises use SAP HANA for in-memory data marts and SAP BW/4HANA implementations that integrate with other data warehouses, including SAP IQ. Enterprises also use SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services (formerly Altiscale) for cloud-based data lakes. SAP’s key differentiators are its shared-nothing, distributed in-memory data platform for real-time analytics; optimized data streaming and query processing; integrated data services layer; advanced compression; and security. In addition, SAP Vora extends the Apache Spark execution framework to provide enriched interactive analytics. The combination of SAP HANA and SAP Vora delivers a powerful BDW capability that brings together in-memory, Hadoop, data warehouses, integration, streaming, and scalability to support large-scale, real-time analytical requirements. Enterprises like SAP’s performance for small to midsized BDW deployments as well as its data integration, data modeling, and storage processing capabilities, but they claim that it lags in high-end scale and simplified administration for large deployments.”
Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning means you’re willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else.” To us, that means we must constantly improve our technology and enhance our offerings to help organizations find efficiencies, harness the mountains of data flooding their systems, and make better and more informed decisions with real-time insights into the data. We stay ahead of the pack so we can help our customers stay ahead of the pack.
For instance, our Modern Data Platform powered by SAP HANA promotes a hybrid approach for customers to innovate both on premise and in the cloud without any disruption to business operations. (Read more in The Modern Data Platform, or How to Remove Constraints to Meet Digital Needs). More specifically the strategy for the newest release of SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 01 is to continuously innovate. The recent release of SAP’s in-memory data management platform includes a combination of new and continuous innovations like database, analytical intelligence, application development and tools, and data management enhancements. SAP BW/4HANA is helping organizations transition from standard data warehouses to enterprise data warehouses. (Read more in EDW: The Next Data Frontier.)
Likewise, we continue to improve SAP Vora, a distributed computing solution that extends the Apache Spark framework to enable interactive analytics on Hadoop. The latest release has been designed to speed, facilitate, and lower the cost of enterprise-level project implementations, so organizations can gain actionable insights from their data, regardless of where the data is stored. Organizations using SAP Vora can take advantage of cloud deployment through Amazon Web Services and SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services to integrate with existing solutions and scale as needed, with no infrastructure management required.
SAP also recently added SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services to our data management portfolio, through our 2016 acquisition of Altiscale, which Forrester cited as offering “white-glove service for Hadoop at a self-service price” (The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Hadoop Cloud Solutions, Q2 2016), an apt description for the fully operated, elastic Hadoop and Spark platform that Big Data Services uniquely provide. With Big Data Services, SAP takes Big Data complexity out of the equation, accelerates time to value, and offers users a cloud-based Hadoop option that is tightly integrated with SAP HANA and SAP Vora.
We are proud to have been named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Warehouse Q2 2017. As a company, SAP strives to push ever forward to develop and deliver the best solutions available. SAP believes it has scored big in the recent Forrester Wave™, but we like to think it’s our customers who are the big winners.
